Make Your Own Homemade Face Masks & Scrubs

How funny is this picture of the lady at the spa with cucumbers splayed across her face? Back in the 50s the average housewife concocted her own homemade face masks and scrubs to keep her skin dewy and soft.

Women today are going back to basics and making up their own homemade face masks using simple ingredients found in the refrigerator and pantry, such as olive oil, brown sugar, table salt, eggs, avocado, honey and yogurt. Homemade face masks are not only fresh and devoid of processing (and testing on animals), they are also economical. After all, my beloved jar of Fresh Sugar Face Polish cost me $30. God knows I love it, but I love the effect my own homemade sugar scrub has on my skin. And my recipe costs me mere pennies.

One of my most popular articles of all time is Make Your Own Homemade Face Masks & Scrubs, which includes 25 recipes for 6 different skin types. Because literally 1000s of people have tried these recipes over the years, they tend to rate them as well, so you can see which ones were beloved and others which, well, weren't so much.

An Ingenius New Way to Get Gorgeous Waves

About.com's Guide to Skin Care, Jen Adkins, shared this amazing YouTube video on her Facebook page and I loved it so much, I had to tell you all about it.

The young woman featured in this YouTube video has pin-straight hair. I mean super-straight hair. Straighter than even mine, but when she goes at it with her curling iron using a method she developed, she's left with luscious, bouncy waves -- the kind you see on the red carpet. And she swears her curls last for hours.

I can't really explain her method to you, you'll just have to watch the video for yourself. See it here. I think a great curling iron is key, because a handful of her viewers reported trying this method and it didn't work, while many others raved about their results.

Heidi Klum Hairstyles

On January 22, Heidi Klum and Seal surprised the world when they announced they were separating after nearly 7 years of marriage. This picture is of Heidi just days before the announcement. The couple has 4 children together, so here's hoping they come to some sort of amicable place when all of this is said and done.

For more of Heidi, check out this photo gallery of Heidi Klum's best hairstyles over the years. I think she looks great in any hair length, but I do love her in a long bob. There are a bunch of variations in this gallery.

Best Products for Acne-Prone Skin

Acne is a huge pain because the blemishes are right on your face and sometimes it feels as if there's nothing that can be done about it. I always recommend seeing a dermatologist if you suffer from chronic acne but there are some great over-the-counter products you can try in the meantime including masks and cleansers. See my list of the Best Products for Acne-Prone Skin.

Try This: A Nail Polish That Changes Color

Last week I treated my neighbor, Lola, age 11, to dinner because her parents were out for the evening and they asked me to check on her. Plus, I think it's important to have friends of all ages.

Lola chattered away over Pad Thai about what it's like to grow up here in Park Slope, Brooklyn (she loves it), what it's like at the school she got into (kids around here "get into" schools, these days it seems) and why she loves her nail polish which she bought from Claire's in the city. It changes colors, she told me, looking down at her turquoise nails. You put your fingers in hot water and the nail polish changes from one color to another. We agreed it pretty much was the coolest thing.

Fascinated, I researched nail polishes that change colors and found a few. There's the Claire's version, Mood for Thought, which Lola has. There's also The Mood Polish, Blaze Color Change Polish and Del Sol Color Changing Nail Polish.

My Thoughts Exactly: How I Feel About Hair Removal

I recently answered some questions about hair removal for About's Hair Removal guide, Naomi Torres (check out her site). She wanted to know my thoughts on laser hair removal, how I groom my brows (threading, baby!) and my favorite shaving products. Of course, there's much more to the interview, so check it out here: "Julyne Derrick Hair Removal Interview."

Sad News: Beauty Author Charla Krupp Has Died

I have sad news to report. Best-selling author of "How Not to Look Old," Charla Krupp, has died of breast cancer at the age of 58. A pioneer of baby boomer beauty, Krupp has been THE beauty expert for the over-50 set since her book's launch in 2008. She spent a whopping 22 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Read more about Charla on her Website.

I met Charla in the summer of 2009 at a library benefit in East Hampton. She gave me her card and urged me to give her a call for an interview. She seemed much younger than her years and was absolutely radiant and gorgeous in person. I've reported on her advice over the years, particularly for my articles on over-50 beauty.

Read Krupp's advice in 25 Makeup Tips to Look Younger and Time Magazine's interview with her.

Rest in peace, Ms. Krupp.

How to Donate Your Barely-Used Beauty Products

Today I cleaned out my beauty closet, which is full of lotions, soaps and creams, shampoos and sprays that I really have use for. Some of this stuff is worth up to $70 a bottle and I even have a $250 flatiron that was given to try out. I'm not really a product junkie and there's no way in my lifetime that I can use all this stuff, and I certainly can't use it by the probable expiration dates. So what to do?

I decided to contact the local women's shelter here my Brooklyn neighborhood. Hopefully, they'll accept my donation and I'll be sure to abide by this wonderful article on "how to donate your gently used beauty products" written by Renee Rouleau, a Dallas-based skincare expert and spa owner who's worked with Demi Lovato, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Kara Dioguardi, Lisa Rinna, Melissa Rycroft and Ali Landry. Turns out she's a huge fan of giving away your gently-used products to local shelters.

Rouleau's secret is to not give away anything in a jar that you could have contaminated with your fingers. She also suggests cleaning brushes and combs first and never giving away mascara. Works for me!

Does Your Closet Need an Overhaul? Hire a Stylist (or a Ply a Friend With Wine)

Pulling together outfits can be overwhelming, especially if you don't have an eye for it or a 3-way mirror that shows you at all angles. I'm guilty as charged. While I know a lot about my makeup and skincare, my clothes closet can overwhelm me, so a couple years ago, About.com's Men's Fashion Guide, Daniel Billett stayed with me in Brooklyn for Fashion Week and offered to help me figure out what clothes in my closet actually worked and which ones didn't.

It worked out brilliantly. While Daniel sat on the couch and drank wine (actually I don't remember if he drank wine, but I like to think he did), I tried on clothes from my closet and then paraded myself in front of him for the critique. Some outfits he loved ("great with your eyes!," "perfect for your figure!!," "great cleavage!!!"), some he didn't ("too short," "too tight," "too dowdy") and some he liked but felt needed different shoe, tights or sweater pairings. By the end of our session I had a pile of clothes for Goodwill, a shopping list for a few missing pieces and a pared-down closet. I also had a great sense of what colors and styles I looked best in and which ones I didn't.

Personal stylists are a an up-and-coming trend. Allison Berlin of Style Made Simple runs such a service in NY. For a fee, an expert will come into your home and help you conduct a wardrobe edit. Other services include actual shopping trips to find pieces that are flattering and stylish and private fittings with "pre-pulled clothes" tailored just for you. I've posted an inquiry to Style Made Simple because I think it's time I had a wardrobe consultation. If I go through with it, I'll let you know how it goes!
