Anne Hathaway's New Pixie Cut Actually a Wig

After Anne Hathaway debuted her new pixie haircut on the streets of Paris, people went crazy for the Audrey Hepburn/Winona Ryder 'do even after it was revealed by Hathaway's rep that the cut is actually a wig she's donned for her movie, "One Day." Wig or not, the look is adorable and looks amazing considering she's got long hair hidden under the cap.

For some odd reason, this wig thing reminds me of a couple weeks ago when I was working from a coffee shop in Seattle and I spotted an older gentleman with a thick head of brown hair that did not match the gray-pubic-hair-consistency scruff that covered his neck. I wasted many moments not working as I debated to myself: Toupee or not toupee?

Should Salons Charge More for Overweight People?

According to Yahoo, a woman was recently charged an extra $5 at a nail salon in Georgia for being overweight. The manager of the salon claimed she had to collect money for the eventual repair/replacement of the pedicure chairs which aren't made for people over 200 pounds. (Read the full article).

While I find this utterly ridiculous and rude, I have to admit that the thought has crossed my mind that salons could charge me more for being tall when it comes to services like waxing. I have looooong legs compared to the average person and it must take much longer to wax me than someone petite like my friend Genie, who introduced me this week to a wonderful Korean spa in Lynnwood, Washington. Genie and I got the most delectable body scrubs there surrounded by women of all shapes and sizes, some twice as large as Genie. Our scrubs were 40 minutes, but Genie got a massage thrown in because it doesn't take 40 minutes to scrub Genie. We decided that as long as a service is timed, it doesn't matter how big or small one is. Food for thought....

How to Get a Hairstyle You Won't Hate

As a beauty writer, I've heard relatively few hair salon horror stories. What I hear a lot of is what I'll call "Hair Disappointment Stories." This is when women leave the salon underwhelmed. Perhaps they expected to feel sexier, they wanted brighter highlights or an edgier cut. Maybe the stylist went too short. In any case, they didn't really get what they were hoping for.

So how to make sure you end up with a hairstyle you love? The biggest rule when off to the salon is simply, "Show, don't tell." This means show your stylist a picture, don't try to explain the hairstyle and when it comes to length, karate-chop with your hand exactly how short you're willing to go, don't say, "3 inches." How to Get Beachy Waves

There are some girls who just look better with tousled hair, rather than perfectly straightened, flat-ironed hair and Sienna Miller is one of them. Kate Hudson is another, Jessica Simpson yet another.

To get the beachy, wavy look it helps if your hair has some natural wave to it and this look works on hair of almost any length, even chin-length hair or a bit shorter. For a quick beachy look, let hair air dry, scrunching it as it dries. Once dry, twist pieces around your fingers to create "ropes." Spritz each rope with hairspray.

If you have straight hair, you can get this look with a curly iron and some salt spray. See How to Get Beachy, Sexy Waves for directions.

Photos of Victoria Beckham's Best Haircuts

Victoria Beckham is famous for her amazing haircuts (see them all in a photo gallery here) and the cut pictured here is a favorite of mine. I realize that to mimic this hairstyle you'd have to have either perfectly tousled naturally wavy hair or an amazing ability with the curling iron, but I still think this cut is hot and proves Victoria Beckham still has it going on when it comes to haircuts. The secret to this cut is in the layering in the back, which is shorter than the front, there's also a bit of wispiness going on which is super modern. You could mimic this cut by scrunching hair as it air dries.

What do you think of this cut?

A Great Tip for the Bath or Shower

I had a wonderful visit this week with a new friend who is one of those women who lives a charmed life. She's not only gorgeous in a beachy, surfer girl, California kind of way, but she's a kite-surfer, yoga instructor and wife of a hot-hot-hot Italian guy who everyone adores and who inherited several acres in the Tuscan countryside. Oh and I did I mention they have the World's Most Adorable 6-month-old?

Shannon is not only incredibly fit, she's also very aware of everything she eats and puts on her skin. She's one of those women who go to acupuncturists for a broken wrist and a naturopathic doctor instead of a primary care physician. She is what I would like to be if I didn't love my cynical side and my habit of making fun of myself.

So Shannon and I do have one thing in common: We both slather ourselves in organic extra virgin coconut oil after our baths. Only today at brunch we had a long discussion over how to keep the oils from ruining bedsheets and our clothes. Shannon has ruined a few items of clothing and bedding and I have too until her naturopath (told you!) taught her a little secret: In the shower, after you cleanse, rub the oils on the body and then rinse off. The oil soaks into skin, trapping moisture but the water washes away the excess leaving skin dewy and baby soft.

Shannon also had some great organic, natural beauty tips I'll share with you later this week...here's a toast to a new friend!

After 40, You Have to Pick Your Face or Your A**?

"When you get older, you have to be ready to trade your ass for your face." -- Quote attributed to actress Catherine Deneuve.

I saw a bunch of high school friends this weekend and was a bit bummed to hear a lot of talk about wrinkles and how old we are. It was true that the plumper of the women looked like they'd hardly aged at all, yet the thinner women were already developing lines (myself included) on their around the eyes and along the mouth. This reminded me of a study of twins published a year ago shows that in women over 40, a few extra pounds actually makes you look younger. This is because we lose fat in our faces as we age. The plumper we are, the more fat that's stored in the face.

I have decided not to let all this talk of wrinkles and age get to me. I reminded my friends that we aren't even halfway through our life expectancy so we certainly aren't old. I don't like it when people who are in their 30s complain about being old. What we will think we are when we are 70? Ancient? I think age is a matter of attitude and how young you feel and act. I know many 70-year-olds who are incredibly active, including one woman who built her own home in Texas in her 70s! She's my hero and she has wrinkles and doesn't care one bit. Love it....

Plus-Sized Model Shocked at Photo Retouching

On the Today Show Thursday, plus-sized model Crystal Renn (pictured here) complained that a photographer re-touched a photo he took of her turning her size 10 frame into what she believes appears to be a size 2. (See the video here).

Photo retouching has been controversial of late. Glamour magazine last year made a huge deal out of including larger-size models in the pages of their magazine and people have cried "foul play" when celebrities such as Demi Moore or Kate Winslet have been the targets of extreme re-touching. It bothers me that media images influence young girls and models to be anorexic or bulimic but after much consideration, I think this model is making a mountain out of a molehill. The changes made to her picture don't seem extreme to me and she still looks healthy in the retouched image. Also, once a model poses for a photo does she really have a say in how it's presented as long as it's not defamatory or defaming? She was, after all, paid to pose.

What do you think?

Bucky BodyWrap: The Adult Version of the Stuffed Bear

I am in love with the adult version of the stuffed bear.

On a recent trip to Bermuda, I had the best facial of my life at La Serena Spa located in the gorgeous Reefs Hotel & Spa. After the facial, I was led to a chair overlooking the infinity pool below and beyond that the turquoise blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. I was already in heaven, but then my therapist Annelize brought out a cup of tea with milk and sugar and a Bucky NeckWrap that she'd warmed in a microwave and placed around my shoulders.

Oh ... my ... goodness. Not only did the wrap smell amazing thanks to the aromatherapy packet inside, but the warmth penetrated my skin and muscles and felt absolutely delicious. The effect was so wonderful that I couldn't wait to buy my own Bucky back in the States so I bought the Bucky BodyWrap on the spot and later carted my 4-pound wrap-o'-love from Bermuda to Brooklyn.

What it is: I decided to get the BodyWrap instead of the NeckWrap because I can use it on my lower back, upper back, feet or neck. It's filled with buckwheat seeds and can be microwaved for heat or placed in the freezer for cooling. The Bucky's come in a very nice box which makes them the PERFECT hostess gifts. (I just bought one for my friend Abby who recently hosted me in her gorgeous Vashon Island home).

If I Had a Boyfriend, I Would Buy This Candle

Reason No. 156 to finally put the brakes on my fabulous single life and seek out a boyfriend: The Jimmyjane massage candle.

My favorite Brooklyn boutique, Diana Kane, carries them and I've gone ga-ga for the scents which are just slightly masculine. This is a good thing because you're meant to light them, blow out the candle and then use the oil for massage. If you worry about burning someone and therefore putting a damper on the evening, don't. Apparently the resulting oil heats to just the perfect temperature.

Buy them online. They make PERFECT gift for a bride-to-be.
